Ford's all-new Fusion Hybrid is officially America's most fuel-efficient midsize sedan. The Dearborn-based automaker received better than expected test results from the Environmental Protection Agency, placing the Fusion Hybrid well ahead of its closest rival, the Toyota Camry Hybrid.
Ford predicted that the Fusion Hybrid would be rated at 47mpg in the city and 44mpg on the highway, but the automaker underestimated the four-door's cruising ability. Although its 47mpg city rating was spot on, the Fusion Hybrid actually managed 47mpg on the highway, netting a combined average of 47mpg.
In comparison, the Camry Hybrid, the current class leader, is rated at 43mpg in the city and 41mpg on the highway.
“The new Fusion is part of our plan to offer vehicles with the very best quality, fuel efficiency, safety, smart design and value,” said Alan Mulally, Ford president and CEO. “We are absolutely committed to class-leading fuel efficiency as a reason to buy Ford vehicles, with customers able to choose the fuel-efficient powertrain that best fits their lifestyle.”
Ford has yet to announce pricing or an official on-sale date for the Fusion Hybrid, but the automaker says “new Fusion models begin arriving at dealers nationwide this fall.”
